The facts date from last Saturday. The man in his eighties, who lived in the residential care center with his wife, wanted to smoke a cigarette outside. He did that every day, but this time it went completely wrong. The glowing ash from his cigarette landed on his clothes, which caught fire. Moments later, his wheelchair was also on fire. The victim was seriously injured and died of his injuries last Friday.
The man was reportedly demented, just like his wife. That is why he was only allowed to smoke under supervision. “We are investigating whether there is negligence in this story,” says Marijke Teunis of the public prosecutor’s office. “There is absolutely no indication of malicious intent.”
In addition to the investigation by the public prosecutor’s office, the son of the victim also filed a complaint with the Agency for Care. No one at the nursing home could be reached for comment.
