The businessmen and entrepreneurs of this sector want the government’s policy support to ensure safe food and implement the compliance of the restaurant industry. Besides, they urged to take public-private integrated initiatives to reduce the complexity of business management, correct the errors and mistakes of restaurants and create efficient manpower for this sector.

The business leaders made this call at the meeting of the Standing Committee on Food and Food Safety at FBCCI’s Motijheel office on Wednesday (July 3).

Chairman of the committee and Secretary General of Bangladesh Restaurant Owners Association Imran Hasan presided over the meeting. FBCCI Director Khandkar Ruhul Amin served as the director-in-charge of the committee.

FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam participated virtually as chief guest in the meeting. There is no alternative to ensure nutritious and safe food for all, he said. Ensuring safe food in a country with a huge population like Bangladesh is difficult, yet we need to implement compliance.

The FBCCI president laid special emphasis on developing skilled and trained workforce for the industry to ensure restaurant environment, safety and food quality. He said, it is not enough to create skilled manpower and send it abroad. Sector-wise skilled manpower should be developed for our own country as well. At this time, Mahbubul Alam assured that the cooperation of FBCCI will continue to ensure safe food and eliminate the membership of restaurant traders.

FBCCI Senior Vice President Amin Helali advised entrepreneurs and stakeholders in the sector to adopt short, medium and long-term plans to identify and find solutions to ensure safe food for all, prevent adulteration, fire safety and other issues in the restaurant industry.

Participating in the open discussion of the meeting, the speakers said, introducing one stop service for the restaurant industry, simplifying the process of obtaining and renewing licenses, making necessary amendments in the anti-adulteration law, conducting raids and fixing guidelines for determining adulteration in food, increasing the testing capacity of mobile courts to detect adulteration, conducting raids. There are several proposals including improving the skills of officials and creating a spirit of cooperation, stopping social harassment of businessmen in the name of campaign, organizing seminars at the national level with all stakeholders to deal with the challenges of safe food and restaurant business, providing opportunities for restaurant owners to correct mistakes, forming a separate department or authority for the restaurant industry. Committee members pointed out.

FBCCI Director Hafiz Haji Haroon-or-Rashid, Niaz Ali Chishti, Standing Committee Co-Chairman and members were also present in the meeting.
