Change will wait. The Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, said on Tuesday that he was “favorable” to an extension beyond 2023 of the possibility of using meal vouchers to purchase all food products, saying he was “studying” the way to achieve this. This measure allowing beneficiaries to purchase products such as pasta, rice, butter, meat and fish with restaurant vouchers could thus be extended.

“I am in favor of us extending beyond December 31, 2023 this provision allowing the use of restaurant vouchers to purchase food products,” declared Bruno Le Maire before the Senate Economic Affairs Committee when restrictions were expected. take effect from January 1, 2024.

Exemption dating from October 2022

From January 1, 2024, it will theoretically no longer be possible to purchase non-consumable products directly with restaurant vouchers in supermarkets. This was an exemption that came into force in October 2022 in order to improve the purchasing power of the French. It ends on December 31, 2023, as recalled the website of the Ministry of the Economy.

On these restaurant vouchers, the Minister for SMEs, Olivia Grégoire, indicated at the beginning of October that she wanted to move to 100% dematerialized “before 2026”. “We will consult and support companies that are still on paper,” Olivia Grégoire then said. She indicated that five million French people used restaurant vouchers.

The non-extension of this exemption worries many restaurant voucher users. Anthony, a computer scientist in Sergines (Yonne), and his wife use them for fruits and vegetables. He told us that he used it “twice a week to run small errands” because of the ceiling. The latter, increased last October from 19 to 25 euros per day, will not change on January 1, 2024, according to the ministry responsible for SMEs.
