The Fochteloërveen is one of the few places in the Netherlands where there is living raised moor. Still, people are concerned. The raised bog must be restored and put into motion if it is to be preserved in the area. In addition to measures such as repairing quays and creating buffer zones, scientists are also thinking hard about solutions. One of these is using floating mats, and this appears to be successful.
Ralph Temmink investigates how you can restore nature in areas where this does not happen automatically. This happens in nature reserves all over the world with coral, mangrove forests, but also here in the Fochteloërveen. In the open deep water, the peat has difficulty growing on its own, because the water is brown in color. As a result, less light reaches the bottom. And sphagnum moss, among other things, needs light to grow. The solution is to let the sphagnum moss grow above water, where there is light.
