Three days after the dramatic parliamentary elections in Sweden, a provisional final result could be known in the Scandinavian country on Wednesday. In the face of an extremely close neck-and-neck race between the left-wing camp and a right-wing conservative bloc, the Swedish electoral authorities had announced that there would be a provisional result on Wednesday at the earliest.
When asked by the dpa, the authority said on Tuesday that it was very difficult to say when exactly the preliminary result would be known – but probably on Wednesday or Thursday. A few final votes are still to be counted before the provisional final result, including above all votes from Swedes abroad and postal votes cast late. It is unclear how many votes are involved – in the last Reichstag election in 2018 there were around 202,000. The final election result in the EU country is usually known about a week after election day.
Sweden experienced an election thriller on Sunday. The first forecasts initially saw the camp of the Social Democratic Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson just ahead. During the evening of the election, the tide turned in favor of the conservative Ulf Kristersson. However, after counting around 95 percent of the votes, his bloc, including the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats, was only one mandate ahead of Andersson’s camp. In addition, it is unclear whether the respective parties can agree on a government basis in the event of a majority.
