The protection of the ecosystem around mining projects is one of the main concerns of companies holding concessions for gold, silver, copper and other mineral extraction deposits.

In this framework, Dundee Precious Metals, operator of the Loma Larga mining project, through the agreement signed with the University of Azuay, through its School of Biology, has been developing biotic studies in the ecosystems surrounding the area of interest.

Thus, on September 17, the “Results of the Biotic Monitoring of birds of prey with emphasis on the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), amphibians with emphasis on Atelopus exiguus and water quality with biological indicators (macroinvertebrates)” were presented.

These monitoring carried out for more than two years have allowed us to generate information about the state of the biological communities; as well as, information regarding the ecological integrity of the aquatic ecosystems in the project area.

Pedro Astudillo, professor and researcher at the University of Azuay and director of the project, highlighted the importance of this type of studies at the páramo level, where it has been determined that monitoring on time scales provides an approximation of the annual stability in the community structure of raptors and amphibians in the region.

Likewise, it has been determined that water quality indices with biological indicators (macroinvertebrates) have remained within acceptable parameters.

Vicente Jaramillo, Environment Manager of Dundee Precious Metals, indicated that this collaboration between academia and private companies is important, since the information collected is essential for the implementation of new conservation plans and strategies for the flora and fauna of the area. of the Loma Larga Project.

The purpose is to guarantee respect for all elements of the environment, in strict compliance with local regulations and the highest conservation standards.

The relationship between Dundee Precious Metals and the University of Azuay began in 2005 and continues to this day. During this time, work has been carried out on environmental audits, studies, monitoring and investigations, in addition to involving students in the mining project.

The objective is for academia, together with mining innovation, to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge about biodiversity and ecosystems in the areas where the project is developed. Likewise, that the academy be a validating actor in the execution and promotion of best practices aimed at strengthening responsible and sustainable mining activity.
