Ecuador went to the polls this Sunday to elect Guillermo Lasso’s successor in early presidential elections marked by an unprecedented security crisis in the Andean country. Around 13.5 million voters were called to choose between Luisa González, the candidate promoted by former president Rafael Correa, and the young businessman Daniel Noboa, son of the five-time candidate Álvaro Noboa, who according to the polls started with a slight advantage. At five in the afternoon, local time, the schools began to close to make way for the scrutiny after a day that passed without major incidents.
