Retail sales moderate growth in August

He retail commerce registered an increase in its sales of 7% in August compared to the same month in 2022, a rate seven tenths lower than the previous month, as reported this past Thursday by the Statistics National Institute (INE).

With the August data, retail sales have had nine consecutive months of positive interannual rates.

Within the sector, sales of food products rose 2.8% year-on-year, while sales of other products increased 17% compared to August 2022, with increases of 15.9% and 12% in sales of other goods and personal equipment, respectively. In contrast, sales of household equipment fell 2.7%.

By distribution modes, the greatest year-on-year growth in sales was recorded by large chains (+12.6%), followed by small chains (+9.8%), single-location companies (+6.4%) and large stores (+4.9%).

Eliminating seasonal and calendar effects, retail trade turnover increased by 7.2% in the eighth month of the year, a rate one tenth lower than that of July.

In monthly terms (August over July), retail trade increased its sales by 0.4% in the seasonally adjusted series, a rate one tenth higher than that of the month of July, thus marking six consecutive months of increases.

By product, food sales increased by 0.2% in August compared to the previous month, while those of other products advanced by 0.8% thanks to other goods (+1.7%), since that sales of household equipment fell 1.8% in the month and sales of personal equipment stagnated.

By distribution methods, all of them increased their monthly sales in the eighth month of the year except for small chains, which did not register a variation. The greatest increase was recorded by single-located companies (+1.7%), followed by big surfaces (+0.2%) and large chains (+0.1%).
