Guwahati: The Federation of Indian Retailers has urged the central government to reduce the tax on consumer goods that people use on a daily basis.

Retailers Federation of India is an integrated organization of 80 lakh micro, small and medium retailers with 42 members. A statement issued by the association said:

Due to the government levying taxes on the daily necessities of people, the prices have gone up. Using these to their advantage, the retail market is invaded by cheap smuggled goods and counterfeit goods. Such products account for 25 to 30 percent of total market sales.

Especially the small, small and medium traders who sell products like biscuits, soft drinks, cigarettes and sweets are forced to sell such products.

Traders engaged in retail trade are educated and economically backward and easily fall into this wrongful trade. This leads to increase in illegal trade in our country.

For example, a pack of 20 cigarettes sells for Rs 300. But fake or smuggled cigarette packets are sold for Rs 80 to 100.

Due to smuggling and tax evasion on fake goods, the goods are sold at low prices and thousands of crores of rupees are lost to the government.

Therefore, in the coming budget, the tax on daily consumables should be reduced. The central government should prevent fake products from entering the market and protect retailers who are caught in the action of food authorities.

This is stated in the report.

Taking advantage of the price hike, the retail market is invaded by cheap smuggled goods and counterfeit goods.
