“Retirement from peace talks with us is completely unacceptable”

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced yesterday (Monday) that Russia will not continue negotiations on a peace agreement with Japan, a confrontation that has not officially ended since the end of World War II, as it is not possible “under current conditions.” The Russian Foreign Ministry noted the “openly unfriendly positions and Japan’s attempts to harm the interests of our country”, referring to sanctions imposed by Japan on 15 non-Ukrainian businessmen and nine Russian organizations, the Reuters news agency reported.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, vehemently opposed the decision, calling it “unfair” and “completely unacceptable.”

“This whole situation was created as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Russia’s response to attributing it to Japan – Russia relations is very unfair and completely unacceptable,” he said, adding that Japan’s attitude towards seeking a peace agreement had not changed and it protested against the Russian decision.

“Japan must continue its determination to impose sanctions on Russia in cooperation with the rest of the world,” he concluded.
