Recycling is estimated at only 1%
The challenge, Citeo points out, is great: achieving 10% of recycled packaging by 2027, in accordance with the Agec law on the shared economy of February 2020. The large-scale test, which involved 16 million French people from four large regions in the north-west of France (Pays de la Loire, Brittany, Normandy, Hauts-de-France), was announced by Citeo at the beginning of July . Education ultimately aspires to “initiation” on a national scale.
Citeo is financed by the packaging producers to support the financing in the local authorities and organize the collection in the yellow bag throughout the national territory and waste recycling. The production of these boxes is planned from October 2024, according to the organization, which depends on the installation of in-store loading devices from March 2025, before the sale in May.
The first available packaging will be one-liter bottles with wide necks, containing fruit juices and soups, before large 75 cl amber bottles, especially for beer, then jars of treatments, the compotes and white cheeses, before amber bottles of 33 centiliters, specified. Jean Hornain.
In addition to the environmental impact, this initiative, developed with the support of the Brasseurs de France association, was facilitated by the increase in glass prices last year during the energy crisis. However, the deposit “reduces the cost of the glass bottle since it is used many times”, underlines Célia Rennesson, according to whom the use of glass bottles saves 75% of energy, 50% of water and 79% of CO2.
