Retz Festival 2024 will be history on July 22. But until then it still has a lot to offer. For example, on Saturday you can go on a cross-border organ tour at 10:30 a.m. Then we will depart from the parish church of Retz to Louka monastery and Vrbovec church in the Czech Republic as well as St. Michael’s Pulkau Church. The organ tour takes place as part of the festival’s partnership with Hudební Znojmo festival.

This segment has become a small tradition as part of the Retz Festival, under the motto “Organ and Trumpet” this year. Organist Ines Schüttengruber and trumpeter Benedikt Fehringer create a concert with works by Telemann, Muffat, Bach and Handel; together with Czech organists Martin Jakubíček and Ondřej Múčk. In the evening, another magnificent building will take center stage: Schrattenthal Castle.

At 8 pm the festival invites you to the big concert “Belcanto furioso” in the authentic and atmospheric historical building. Aleksandra Zamojska, together with the Vienna Pandolfis Consort, brings the Baroque era to life. And it was all at the Baroque era. In the midst of the thirty years’ war that shook Europe to its foundations and permanently shifted the balance of power, the fine arts flourished.

Contradictions define this time. Human misery combined with feudal megalomania and deep faith against unbridled greed for life. The soprano wants these sharp contrasts to be audible. Zamojska has already performed at the Salzburg Festival and the Ruhr Triennale and the Opéra Bastille. “Good manners, love and suffering, life and death are intertwined in a wise dance,” was the promise of the festival announcement.

Black Market Tune

“Dance across borders” is the motto of the Thaya Bridge concert. The band “Black Market Tune”, which has a special store up its sleeve, wants to ensure this.

You can also spend Sunday morning with the Retz Festival, at the “Concert on Thaya Bridge” at 11 am in Hardegg; event also as part of the cross-border cooperation with the Znojmo Festival. The concert has a clear message: “Dance beyond borders – Drifters & Vagabonds”. The center – the bridge – is more than a symbol. It stands for the unity of the cultural region between Retz and Znojmo which was centuries old.

Swedish death songs and Scottish drinking songs, French love songs and outrageous yodels, these are the genres of “Black Market Tune”. They literally kick up dust when they retrieve archives from attics and find sheet music and textual material that is hundreds of years old. Paul Dangl, Colin Nicholson, Jörg Reissner and Johanna Kugler bring traditional feelings about life to life. Together with their own compositions, the band surprises with a completely new image of country music.

Say goodbye to “Time Lapse” on the main square – everything moving fast

At 7:30pm on Sunday there will be the last chance to experience “Cain and Abel” in the city’s parish church, literally. The production is 90 minutes of exciting modern theater – it can be assumed that the story is well known.

And then it’s time to say “goodbye”, but not without giving the Retzers a farewell gift. With free admission, Julie Frey is essentially the bouncer with “Time Lapse” at the main square at 9 pm
