Reusable periodic protection will be covered by Social Security for those under 25 from the year 2024, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced on France 5 on Monday March 6.

Secondly, Elisabeth Borne clarified that the measure would be reserved, like the reimbursement of the contraceptive pill, for people under 25. For several years, feminist collectives have denounced a “buffer tax” and demanded that the VAT rate applied to sanitary towels and tampons be reduced to 5.5%, as for other basic necessities. This has been the case since December 2015.
To fight against menstrual precariousness, the government had made, at the start of the 2021 school year, free hygienic protection for all students in Crous university residences and university health services. “We are aiming for 1,500 distributors and complete free admission at the start of the school year”said Frédérique Vidal, then Minister of Higher Education, in February 2021.
