Reuters: Apple Negotiates Electric Vehicle Battery Supply

by time news

American tech company Apple has begun negotiations with Chinese battery makers for electric vehicles, Reuters reported, citing sources. The agency clarifies that negotiations are underway with CATL and BYD companies for the further production of their own electric vehicles.

The prospects for reaching an agreement are not yet clear, however, according to agency sources, Apple has set one of the conditions for possible suppliers to build production facilities in the United States of America. This condition was confirmed to the agency by a man from the administration of US President Joe Biden.

Jared Bernstein, senior economic adviser to the White House, said the condition “is fully in line with what the president was talking about in terms of relocating supply chains, especially in areas where we could grab a share of the global market.”

Reuters sources say CATL, the world’s largest manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles, is reluctant to expand production facilities in the United States due to political tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Last December, the agency announced that Apple is working on its own electric car, scheduled for release in 2024. Apple’s planned electric car could include revolutionary battery technology, the agency said, citing sources.
