If Didier Raoult had to hand over, in September 2022, to the management of the Mediterranean Infection University Hospital Institute (IHU), the doctor and microbiologist nonetheless remains active on the front of scientific publications. Evidenced by a manuscript, not reviewed by peers – that is to say not yet validated for publication in a scientific journal – posted April 4. Covering 30,423 patients with Covid-19 treated at his institute between March 2, 2020 and December 31, 2021, this “preprint” describes the effectiveness in terms of reducing mortality of the treatment combining hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and azithromycin (AZ), the famous “Raoult protocol”.

Unsurprisingly, this new study has raised methodological criticism from experts. It is also the subject of more serious accusations, made in a forum signed by many learned societies and personalities such as the president of the Academy of Sciences, Alain Fischer. Posted in The world, this text focuses on the very nature of the study and its regulatory status. For the signatories, this work constitutes “possibly the largest ‘wild’ therapeutic trial known to date”these requirements having also been continued “for more than a year after the formal demonstration of their ineffectiveness”.

What did this study consist of? In a tweet posted on April 25Didier Raoult summed up the results as follows: “Study of the 30,000 cases of Covid 2020-2021, effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine and the vaccine to prevent death! “. He also discusses these observations in his book Autobiographypublished in early April (Michel Lafon, 336 pages, 18.95 euros): “The hydroxychloroquine/azithromycin combination is associated with mortality at least five times lower than that of other therapies. »

The study in question is in fact part of a line of publications by the Marseilles IHU with questionable methodology. As a reminder, Didier Raoult very early on showed his enthusiasm for chloroquine then hydroxychloroquine, molecules used against malaria for the first, and lupus or various rheumatological indications for the second. “Repositionings” of chloroquine had already been attempted, without success, against the Ebola, dengue or chikungunya viruses. On February 25, 2020, in a video titled “Coronavirus: Endgame! “, the microbiologist estimated, on reading a very incomplete Chinese study, that, thanks to this molecule, the Covid-19 was “probably the easiest respiratory infection to treat”.
