Madurai: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has demanded that the central government withdraw the tollgate annual fee hike.

Association administrators Rathinavel, Jagatheesan, Sridhar, Jeer Babu, Ramesh, Ilangovan, Rajiv, Sundharalingam said in Madurai:

The National Highways Department has set up 55 tollgates in Tamil Nadu. 29 Apr 2023 at Tollgate. From 1, the National Highways Department has increased the toll by Rs 5 to Rs 55 depending on the vehicle. For the rest, it announces a fee hike every year on Sept. 1.

Already disgruntled motorists have been shocked by the announcement of additional charges by the National Highways Department. The public and the business sector have been severely affected by the increase in the prices of petrol, diesel and gas cylinders.

Fare hike in Tamil Nadu will put additional financial burden on everyone. Trucks carrying vegetables, fruits, grains, paddy, cooking oil, dairy products, construction materials will increase the fare. This leads to an increase in the prices of all types of goods and inflation. Therefore, the central government should withdraw the increase in tollgate annual fee, they said.
