jpnn.com – DPR RI Legislative Board Member Abraham Sridjaja said the revision of Law Number 18 of 2003 concerning Advocates must be immediately discussed and completed.

According to him, the revision of the urgent advocate law was carried out because the condition of the world of advocates in Indonesia is increasingly unqualified and experiences degradation of professionalism.

“At present, we see many advocates who do not have adequate competence, even many graduates of law graduates who immediately practice as advocates without a strong understanding of the law and professional ethics,” Abraham was quoted as saying from his written statement on Sunday (9/2 /2025).

Worse yet, continued Abraham, there are people who are not advocates but open the law firm (law firm) and offer open legal services on social media.

“In fact, according to the principle of officium nobile, advocates are not allowed to offer themselves or promote legal services,” he said.

The Golkar faction legislator also highlights weaknesses in the current advocate organizational system, where advocates affected by ethical violations can easily move organizations and remain practicing.

“This is worrying, because there should be a tighter ethical standard and supervisory mechanism to ensure an advocate with integrity,” he said.

In Article 4 paragraph (1) of the Advocate Law, Advocates must carry out their profession by upholding the dignity and honor of the profession and complying with the code of ethics. Meanwhile, Article 5 paragraph (1) letter c of the Advocate Law expressly prohibits advocates from conducting advertisements or promotion of legal services openly, as stipulated in the Indonesian Advocate Code of Ethics.

DPR RI Baleg member Abraham Sridjaja said the revision of the Advocate Law must be immediately discussed in order to restore the advocate profession.
