The Gyeongbokgung Palace Management Office of the Palace Relics Headquarters of the National Heritage Administration completed the production of a replica of the sub-fresco of Gyotaejeon in Gyeongbokgung Palace and released it on the 18th. This is the first cooperative project since the ‘Social Contribution Activities Agreement (MOU) for the Preservation, Management, and Utilization of Cultural Heritage’ signed with Italian luxury brand Gucci in 2022.
The painting of flowers and birds and the painting of Queen Dowager Peninsula were originally attached to the wall of Gyotaejeon in Gyeongbokgung Palace, the queen’s living quarters. It is presumed that Gyotaejeon was demolished and transferred to the Japanese Government General Museum in 1917 to repair damage from a fire that occurred at Changdeokgung Palace.
Since then, the National Museum of Korea, which was transferred to the relics and materials under the jurisdiction of the Japanese Government-General of Korea, has been in possession of them.
The two paintings produced and released by the National Heritage Administration in collaboration with Gucci are replicas painted exactly like the original.
The opinions of relevant experts were collected at each stage of production. The underlying paper and pigment were produced based on the results of a scientific investigation and analysis of the Gyotaejeon murals actually housed in the National Museum of Korea.
A national heritage repair technician also participated, and the basic principle was to replicate the phenomenon by drawing it as close to its current state as possible, without arbitrarily restoring any missing parts of the original relic.
According to the records of the Joseon Government-General Museum,
The National Heritage Administration said, “The completed copy of the Bufresco is displayed in the form of a detachable panel, taking into account the fact that the interior of Gyotaejeon has not been completely restored to its historically accurate state and the possibility that its location may be moved through further research in the future.” “It will be attached to a panel made of pine and paulownia wood and installed so that the two points face each other on the top of the wall on both sides of the main hall of Gyotaejeon,” he explained.
The National Heritage Administration will open the main hall of Gyotaejeon, which is not normally open to the public, from the 19th to the 30th for a limited time to reveal this replica.
During the opening period, the mural paintings can be viewed in the main hall of Gyotaejeon without prior application from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM every day, excluding days when Gyeongbokgung Palace is closed.
