Living Fossil- These are the organisms that have lived on earth since prehistoric times and are still alive today. All the coelacanth fish found on the coast of Madagascar in Africa are described as such.
There are also such living fossils in trees. Wollemi pines are one such tree. Although the prehistoric remains of these trees were found, they were not seen on earth, so scientists thought that they were extinct 20 lakh years ago. But in 1994, explorers who went climbing in the Blue Mountains of Australia discovered these trees. With that, it became clear that they were not extinct.
Today there are 60 trees in Australia’s national park called Wollemi National Park. But these remnants of Earth’s earliest vegetation face many threats. The fungus Phytophthora cinnamomi affects their health. These trees are also affected by frequent bushfires in New South Wales, Australia.

Since the discovery of these trees in 1994, their seeds have been collected and grown in many secret places around the world. The Wollemi Pine Recovery Team, a joint coalition of Australian government and conservationists, is also at the forefront of saving this rare tree from extinction.
