Listening to articles from Le Temps while making your coffee or during your morning commute: this has been possible through our app or website since this summer (see the “audio articles” tab). Each week since July, journalists from our editorial team read in-depth topics to bring them to life in your ears. Many of you have listened to us and shared your feedback, encouraging us to continue exploring audio in all its forms.

Seeking to adapt to the habits of our readers and listeners, we have decided this fall to test a new feature: more ‘hot’ news articles selected by us, read by various artificial intelligence voices, so you can listen to them as soon as they go live. They will be clearly identified as such.

Listen to a first article read by an AI: Helene, three days to transform a simple storm zone into a major and deadly cyclone

Until now, we had refrained from this due to a lack of quality voices according to our standards. However, as AI continues to improve and the offerings refine, we present to you, who follow the productions of Le Temps, articles read by two types of voices: some purely synthetic, and voices virtually trained by software to replicate that of two of our journalists – in this case, the authors of this text – for a somewhat less ‘robotic’ output.

We are certainly aware of the ethical dimension of this choice and the questions it raises, which is why we have always wished to proceed cautiously on the path of generative artificial intelligence. Feel free to share your impressions with us: we are building these new features with you, aiming to better support you throughout the day.

Happy listening!

Emerging Trends in Audio Journalism and AI Integration

As the media landscape evolves, the integration of audio journalism is set to become a defining trend. More publications, like Le Temps, are recognizing the potential of delivering content in audio format, allowing readers to absorb news while multitasking. This shift not only caters to the fast-paced lifestyles of modern audiences but also opens up fresh avenues for engagement.

With the advent of artificial intelligence, we are witnessing a revolution in content consumption. The ability to produce high-quality audio articles with AI voices presents a unique way to blend technology with journalism. Publications are now exploring AI-generated audio pieces, which are identified transparently to maintain trust with the audience. By employing both synthetic voices and those trained to mimic human journalists, the industry strives for a balance between automation and authenticity.

Ethical considerations are paramount as media companies navigate this new territory. As AI continues to develop, it raises significant questions about originality and the role of the journalist. Responsible adoption will shape the future of audio journalism, as feedback from listeners drives improvements in both the quality and scope of AI-generated content.

The push for personalized audio experiences also highlights an important trend: readers want news delivered in ways that suit their individual lifestyles. By integrating audio capabilities into their platforms, media outlets are not just informing but also enhancing the user experience. As this trend continues, we can anticipate a rise in diverse audio formats, from quick news summaries to in-depth investigative reporting, all accessible at the listener’s convenience.

Ultimately, the future of audio journalism lies in collaboration between human journalists and AI technologies, striving to create an informative, engaging, and ethically sound media environment.
