American intelligence learned of the Russian government’s plans to kill Papperger in early 2024.

Five American and Western officials familiar with the situation confirmed that Papperger was not the only target, CNN reported.

A series of assassinations of defense industry leaders across Europe who were supporting Ukraine in the war were planned. Of all the targets, the plan to eliminate Papperger was the most elaborate.

“When the Americans learned of this plan, they informed Germany, whose security services were able to protect Papperger and prevent the plot,” a senior German official said, noting that Germany had been warned by the United States in advance.

A senior NATO official has confirmed the discovery of a “campaign of covert sabotage by Russia that has strategic implications.”

He said that Moscow is recruiting agents to commit arson and plan murders:

“They have stepped up these actions now because they believe that the elections in the West are creating favorable conditions for undermining public support for Ukraine.”

Moreover, Papperger’s murder could have been carried out not by recruited agents, but directly by Russian special services (CNN was unable to confirm this information).

National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said the United States had been closely monitoring Russia’s increased subversive activities in recent months. The German Embassy in Washington declined to comment.

Earlier, “Kursor” reported that a shocked Russian pilot “leaked” data to Ukraine after the attack on Okhmatdet.
