First a boat ride, then a museum visit? For how much longer?

Two city dwellers on a country trip: Kurt Tucholsky described the small town of Rheinsberg in Brandenburg in 1912 with much tenderness and humor. So nothing can actually come between Rheinsberg and “Tucho”. But now things could go down the drain with Tucholsky in Ruppiner Land.

To get to Rheinsberg in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district, a Berlin couple today would probably take the S-Bahn from the main train station to Charlottenburg, then get on the regional express towards Wittenberge and change to the bus at Rheinsberger Tor in Neuruppin.

When Kurt Tucholsky came up with “Claire” and her “little wolf” on a trip to the country – perhaps a trip with his future wife Else Weil was the model – the Lehrter train station stood in place of the main train station. “Tucho” doesn’t reveal where his lovebirds set off anyway. Only that the “adventure” only began between the express train and the small train in Löwenberg, deep in Brandenburg.

The lost travel guide already suggests something adventurous – and then there is a fire unknown land between Löwenberger and Ruppiner Land. “Little Wolf” helps to erase things heroically. But does it get even more adventurous in the story of the two unmarried townspeople who choose Rheinsberg as their love nest, while Claire’s family thinks they are somewhere else entirely? There are a lot of kisses this weekend, some of the comments are biting, at least his (“Don’t confuse the terms. Amor patriae is not the same as ‘amor’ as such.”), her chatter is often delivered in squeaky baby language (“Never not permitted me who. I would really like to…”). The sexual aspect, however, remains hinted at – Claire then remains silent.

Buy expertise

The two adhere to a maxim that Tucholsky later formulates as follows: “Let go of the wheel. Spin through the world”, in a rowing boat on the lake, looking through the window at a provincial stage or, modernity’s invasion of the Ruppiner Land!, in front of the cinematograph.

It is doubtful whether a Wolfgang could be called a little wolf today. Or “my monkey”. But if today’s Claire and Wolfgang were to spend their weekend in Rheinsberg, they would probably visit Rheinsberg Castle on the banks of Lake Grienerick, the pearl of the Friederizian Baroque, like their predecessors, who have been immortal since 1912. “Rheinsberg” would be included, perhaps with Kurt Szafranski’s illustrations, which made it a “picture book for lovers”. Two city dwellers visiting the castle wouldn’t miss the Tucholsky Museum, which has been located here since 1993. And of course it’s only there because of Tucho’s successful novella. The German Cultural Council has now given the museum its “Red List“ because they do not want to fill the position of museum director Peter Böthig, who is retiring, from 2024 onwards. The tourist information office could be taken over and expertise could be purchased if there was money in the city’s coffers again. German conditions in 2023.

But now something is happening: On November 30th, the district administrator wants to propose to the district council that they take over the sponsorship of the museum, which the Rheinsberg city council would have to approve in December. Look at me!
