Rhône: a driver follows her GPS and her car ends up under a train

An itinerary error could have been a tragedy. A car got stuck on the railway tracks between Lyon and Mâcon overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. The reason ? His driver simply followed his GPS. At the Quincieux level crossing (Lyon metropolitan area, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region), he was told to turn left. In the middle of the night, around 1:30 a.m., she enters the tracks.

According Progress, one of its wheels locks in the manoeuvre. Impossible to get out of the vehicle, a Volkswagen Polo. She doesn’t have time to warn the authorities at a security terminal. The driver, in her twenties, fled her car before it was hit by a freight train. Embedded in the front of the train, the Polo is dragged on the rails for nearly 500 m.

Negative tests

The train driver was not taken to a hospital. And the driver’s blood alcohol and narcotics tests are negative.

The SNCF was alerted around 2:30 a.m. Agents of the company therefore intervened to free up one of the lanes and restart traffic. The car was towed. The damaged train was put back into circulation a few minutes before 10 a.m.

The accident resulting from a driving error, no investigation was opened by the gendarmerie. As expected, train traffic, which was severely disrupted by the collision, gradually resumed around 11 a.m.
