Ricardo Bronislado Szychowski, 89, passed away on Wednesday 7th. His remains will be laid to rest on Thursday 8th, from 10am to 12:30pm, at the La Cachuera SA establishment in Apóstoles, and will later be transferred to the private cemetery.

Ricardo Szychowski was the youngest son of Juan Szychowski, founder of La Cachuera, a pioneering company in the production of yerba mate in Misiones. With Ricardo’s death, a chapter in the history of this family that has left an indelible mark on the yerba mate industry in the region has come to a close.

A pioneering family in the yerba mate industry

At the beginning of the 20th century, Julián Szychowski and his wife Carolina emigrated from Borszcow, Poland, and arrived in Buenos Aires. There, the governor of Misiones, Juan José Lanusse, offered the settlers a 40,000-hectare plot in Apóstoles, where Julián, a miller by trade, established his home and began working the land.

After Julian’s death, his son Juan took over the family farming business. Juan Szychowski, also known as Pancho, created the first yerba mate brand called Aroma, which was later renamed La Cachuera and later Amanda, which today is one of the most recognized brands on the market.

Legacy and farewell

La Cachuera, located 15 kilometers from Apóstoles, on the road to Azara, is a testimony to the legacy of the Szychowski family. Today, as Ricardo Bronislado Szychowski is said goodbye, we remember not only the history of a pioneering family, but also their significant contribution to the economy and culture of Misiones.
