New Delhi: Many changes took place in the month of June this year. Once again the Narendra Modi government was formed at the centre. But the common man continues to get shocks. That is because in the month of June potatoes became costlier by 59%, onions by 46% and tomatoes by 30%. Not only this, the prices of rice also rose by 13% this month. Because of this the cost of preparing a vegetarian thali for a household has increased by 10%. However, because of broiler chicken becoming cheaper this month the price of non-vegetarian thali has come down by 4%.

Trouble for vegetarians, fun for chicken eaters

Vegetable eaters are in trouble these days because veg thali is getting more and more expensive. In the month of June, the cost of preparing veg thali in an average household has increased again. This month its cost has increased by 10%. The reason for this is the high cost of everything from potatoes, onions, tomatoes to rice and lentils. Yes, this month due to the fall in the price of chicken, the cost of preparing non-veg thali has reduced by 4%. This comparison has been made with the cost of the same month last year.

Where did the report come from

The report about the cost of veg thali and non-veg thali in the month of June has come from CRISIL. On Friday, CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analysis (CRISIL MI&A Research) released its monthly “Rice Roti Rate” report. According to this report, the cost of veg thali increased by 10 percent in the month of June. Earlier in the month of May, the cost of preparing veg thali had increased by more than nine percent. It has been told in this report that chicken has also become cheaper in the month of June. Due to this, the cost of preparing non-veg thali has reduced by four percent. Earlier in the month of May, the cost of preparing non-veg thali had also decreased by seven percent. In this report, CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analysis has calculated the average cost of preparing thali at a household’s home. This calculation has been done on the basis of input prices prevailing in North, South, East and West India.

Why veg thali became expensive

Crisil’s Roti Rice Report states that in the month of June, the price of potatoes increased by a whopping 59 percent. Along with this, onions also became 46 percent more expensive. On the other hand, the heat increased a lot in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh during the month of June. Due to this, tomato plants got scorched. Due to this, the price of tomatoes increased by 30 percent. The remaining gap was covered by rice. This month, the price of rice has also increased by 13 percent. In such a situation, the cost of preparing a vegetarian thali was bound to increase.

Rice and lentils spoiled the game

While rice became costlier by 13% in June, pulses also became costlier by 22%. The price of tur dal reached Rs. 250 per kg in the open market this month. The price of rice and pulses is important in deciding the price of a thali because the weightage of rice in deciding the price of a vegetarian thali is 13% while that of pulses is 9%. This means that both of them together become about one-fourth percent.

Non-veg thali is getting cheaper

For the past several months, non-vegetarians are having a great time. Because the price of broiler chicken is decreasing every month. Eggs are also getting cheaper. If we look at it on a yearly basis, the price of chicken has fallen by 14 percent during the month of June. Before this, that is, in the month of May, chicken had become cheaper by 16 percent. Actually, chicken was very expensive during the last financial year. This year the prices are continuously falling.

Both the thali became expensive on monthly basis

If we compare on a month-by-month basis, in the past month both veg and non-veg thali have become expensive. During this period veg thali has become 6% costlier while non-veg thali has become 4% costlier. Actually, rice which is an important part of both veg and non-veg thali has become expensive this month. Vegetables and lentils are also used in both the thali. Tomato and onion are also used in preparing vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. In comparison to the past one month, this month onion has become costlier by 15% while tomato has become costlier by 29%.
