Richard Chase, Veteran Pilot and Community Leader, Dies at 89

A distinguished career in aviation, coupled with dedicated service to his community, defined the life of Richard Ralph Chase, who passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the Willows at Willard in Ohio. He was 89 years old.

Born on December 26, 1935, in Norwalk, Ohio, Chase was the eldest of five children born to Herman Mason and Olive (Earle) Chase. His life was one of service, dedication, and a quiet, impactful presence in the lives of those around him.

From Aviation Cadet to American Airlines Captain

Chase’s commitment to service began with his graduation from Willard High School in 1953 and continued with 13 years of service in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard. He initially entered the Air Force as an aviation cadet, earning a reserve commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. His early assignments included navigator school and service as a C-118 Navigator at McGuire AFB in New Jersey.

Driven to excel, Chase later pursued pilot training, becoming proficient in the C-130 aircraft and serving at Charleston AFB in South Carolina. He transitioned to a commercial career with American Airlines, but continued to serve his country for an additional three years, flying KC-97 tankers with the Wisconsin Air National Guard in Milwaukee.

For nearly three decades, Chase soared through the skies as an American Airlines pilot. Based primarily at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, he also contributed his expertise as an instructor and later as fleet manager of the 757/767 fleet at the airline’s training facility in DFW. Throughout his commercial career, he piloted a diverse range of aircraft, including the B-727, B-707, MD-80, DC-10, and B757/767.

A Passion for Flight Beyond Commercial Aviation

Even in retirement, Chase’s love for flying remained strong. Relocating to Texas, he took to the skies in a Commonwealth Sky Ranger and a meticulously maintained 1942 Stearman bi-plane, complete with authentic period attire. This passion underscored a lifelong dedication to the freedom and adventure of flight.

Community Leadership and Deep Faith

Beyond the cockpit, Chase was a pillar of his community. He served as a beloved Sunday school teacher, known for his engaging storytelling and dry sense of humor. His commitment extended to public service, where he served as county judge in Wise County, Texas, from 2002 to 2006. He was also actively involved with Wise County Veterans.

Those who knew him remember a man deeply rooted in his faith. He shared 60 years of life with his wife, Dorothy, and found joy in knowing his children and grandchildren also embraced Christianity. “He was especially courageous and loving in the last years of his life,” a family member noted.
