The market was admitted to the organization at the NOFO annual meeting held in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

NOFO was founded in 1902 and as a non-profit organization it is made up of food halls and markets from countries such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and now also from Latvia. The main goal of the association is to provide its members with a platform for the exchange of opinions and experiences, jointly promoting the preservation and development of traditional trade.

Baiba Beatrise Sleže, chairwoman of the board of Riga Central Market manager “Rīgas nami”, explains that the historical heritage is one of the greatest values ​​of Riga Central Market.

This year marks 100 years since the construction of the Riga Central Market started and the building complex and territory under the management of “Rīgas namu” has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

“That’s why we treat the preservation of history and traditional market function with responsibility. Markets will change, but one of their basic functions will remain – the direct connection between the producer and the buyer, as well as the opportunity to meet all kinds of people,” emphasizes Sleže, who is now also elected to the NOFO board.

At the meeting of NOFO members in Stockholm, it was decided that the members of the association will be hosted by Riga Central Market at the next annual meeting of members. The meeting is planned for the end of May 2025, and until then the members of the association are invited to contribute to the successful conduct of the annual meeting in Riga by offering topical and market-challenging topics for discussion.

It has already been reported that the Riga Central Market, along with 12 other markets, signed a cooperation agreement at the World Historic Markets Summit held in the Italian city of Florence this year and became a co-founder of the International Association of Historic Markets.

“Rīgas nami” is the largest administrator and manager of municipal property and capital institutions, social housing, municipal market areas and the buildings in them, lessor of premises and developer of new projects, as well as the owner of event centers “Splendid Palace” and “Melngalvju nams” .

In 2023, the capital company worked with a turnover of 27,976,356 euros. On the other hand, the profit was 19,853 euros. The share capital of “Rīgas namu” is 110,162,151 euros, the owner of the company is Riga Municipality.
