Since Sunday evening, extreme rains have continued in Riga and the amount of precipitation has reached 115 millimeters or 11 liters per square meter by noon, which is more than twice the previous record and is the norm for a month and a half.

Taking into account the large amount of rainwater that has flowed into the water bodies, it is not yet possible to judge the quality of the bathing water. It should be taken into account that many areas and basements were flooded, so various types of pollution may have entered the water, for example from some material storage areas or dry toilets.

In the official swimming areas of the Health Inspectorate near the Daugava, swimming water samples will be taken for analysis on July 30 and the results will be known by August 2, while in the swimming areas of the Gulf of Riga – samples will be taken on July 31 and the results will be known by August 5.

It is planned to place “Do not swim” signs in the official swimming areas. There are eight official swimming spots in Riga – Daugavgrīva, Vakarbulļi, Vecāki, Rumbula, Bābelītī, Ķipsala, Lucavsala and Lucavsala bay.
