Riga Technical University Becomes Only Latvian School in Global Top 1000

Riga Technical University climbed into the world’s top thousand universities in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, marking a significant upward shift from its previous grouping while remaining the only higher education institution in Latvia to reach that global threshold.

The latest global rankings evaluated 2,297 institutions worldwide, placing Oxford University at the very top, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in second place, with Princeton and Stanford universities sharing the third position. Against that massive global field, Riga Technical University (RTU) advanced out of the 1001–1200 bracket into the 801–1000 tier. The institution recorded indicator growth across every single one of the five distinct categories assessed by the publication over the course of the year.

How Higher Education Institutions Across Latvia Ranked

While RTU crossed the threshold into the top thousand, the rest of Latvia’s academic landscape experienced varied movements. The University of Latvia (LU) held its ground in the 1001–1200 group, while Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) climbed higher into the 1201–1400 tier. Meanwhile, the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) placed below 2001.

Performance metrics shifted across multiple fronts for these institutions. LU and RSU registered growth in four of the assessed categories. LBTU saw its results improve in three areas—research environment, research quality, and international outlook—while experiencing declines in teaching and industry collaboration.

International Outlook Emerges as the Country’s Core Academic Strength

Latvian universities found their strongest performances concentrated in a single evaluation metric. Every one of the four evaluated institutions earned its highest rating in the category of International Outlook.

RTU led the domestic cohort with 71.2 points in internationality, closely followed by RSU with 66.8 points. All four universities improved their international outlook scores compared to the previous edition of the rankings, highlighting an expanding global footprint across Latvia's higher education sector.
