Rikkie Valerie Kollé Makes History as First Trans Winner of Miss Netherlands

Rikkie Valerie Kollé has broken barriers and made history as the first trans woman to be crowned Miss Netherlands. The 22-year-old from Breda was awarded the prestigious title on July 8th at the AFAS Theater in Leusden.

Donning a stunning red gown with a thigh-high slit, Kollé accepted her crown from previous winner Ona Moody and reigning Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel from the USA. Taking to Instagram after her win, Kollé expressed her disbelief and joy, stating, “I DID IT!!!!! It’s unreal but I can call myself Miss Nederland 2023.”

Reflecting on her journey, Kollé shared that the competition process was both educational and wonderful, and she is incredibly proud and happy to have made her community proud. She emphasized that while she is a trans woman, her victory is a testament to her own strength and character.

Grateful for the support she received, Kollé extended her thanks to her fellow contestants, the jury, and the wider Miss Netherlands team, saying that her win is just the beginning of many great things to come.

The competition’s official Instagram page celebrated Kollé’s victory by sharing a photo of her wearing her crown and holding a bouquet of flowers. They quoted the jury report, stating that she radiated throughout the show and demonstrated the greatest progress in the competition. The jury believes that the organization will enjoy working with Kollé due to her strong story and clear mission.

Kollé’s win grants her the opportunity to compete in Miss Universe 2023, which will take place in El Salvador in December. Although the exact date is yet to be confirmed, contestants from 24 countries will come together to vie for the coveted title of Miss Universe.

The Miss Universe franchise came under new ownership in 2022 when trans businesswoman Anne Jakrajutatip, CEO of Thai media group JKN and founder of Life Inspired For Transsexual Foundation, acquired it. Jakrajutatip, who delivered a powerful speech at the 71st Miss Universe competition, expressed her commitment to celebrating the power of feminism and ensuring diverse cultures, social inclusion, gender equality, and creativity are at the forefront.

Trans women were previously banned from competing until 2012, and in 2018 Ángela Ponce became the first trans woman to participate in the pageant. With Kollé’s historic win, the world of beauty pageants takes another step towards inclusivity and recognizing the achievements and talents of all women.
