TOKYO – Thirteen-year-old Riko Fujinaka is quickly becoming a name to watch in Japanese cinema, garnering praise for her debut performance in the recently released film, “The Fictional Dog and the Lying Cat.” Despite having no prior acting experience, Fujinaka’s work has resonated with audiences and critics alike.
From Modeling to the Big Screen
Fujinaka’s rise began with a win in a modeling competition, leading to a promising career in entertainment.
Fujinaka possesses a striking look, described as having a mature face and captivatingly large eyes. Her entry into the entertainment world began in 2023 when, at her mother’s encouragement, she won the grand prize at an audition for the elementary school fashion magazine “Nico☆Petit.” This victory led to her signing with the agency “Irving,” which also represents actress Nao, 30.
In “The Fictional Dog and the Lying Cat,” directed by Yudai Morigaki, Fujinaka portrays an older sister who flees a troubled family following the death of her younger brother. Remarkably, she tackled scenes spanning her character’s life from childhood through high school, despite being in fifth grade during filming. Veteran actor Ken Yasuda, 52, lauded her “incredible concentration,” and social media has exploded with positive reactions, with viewers commenting on her powerful presence and impressive skill for a newcomer.

Fujinaka looks to Kanna Hashimoto, 26, also hailing from Kyushu, as a source of inspiration. “I still don’t have confidence in my acting skills, but after acting for the first time, I started to enjoy it a little bit,” she shared. “I hope to be able to play a lot of roles that people say, ‘This is the only person I can think of for this role.’”
Born on April 23, 2012, in Oita Prefecture, Fujinaka stands at 1 meter 59 (approximately 5 feet 2 inches) tall. Beyond acting and modeling, she has a passion for dance, having studied hip-hop since the age of four.
