The white storks (Ciconia ciconia), hosted in the villages of the Municipality of Pogoni, received the care of officials and volunteers again this year, in the established activity of ringing and cleaning their nests.
The action was implemented by the staff of the Pamvotida Lake Management Agency of Ioannina in collaboration with the coordinator of white stork ringing in Greece of the Hellenic Bird Ringing Center Eva Stets, the environmentalist and ringer of white storks Dionysis Mamasis and the Municipality of Pogoni, with the assistance of DEDDIE Ioannina and volunteers.
The crew took care of the one family of storks that is hosted in Kalpaki and then went to Parakalamos, where 37 families are hosted. Specifically, twelve nests were ringed and 36 stork chicks were ringed. The process takes about 20 minutes in each nest. Stork chicks are taken to the ground, biometrics are taken, a unique coded ring is placed on the leg, and they are returned to the nest.
At the same time, the nests were cleaned of garbage (strings, plastic bags, sacks, clothes, etc.), which the storks carry as soft materials for the repair of the nest. These materials are very dangerous for chicks, as there is a risk of mutilation or deformity of their limbs if they become entangled in them during the first 20 days of their lives, when before they even stand on their feet, they “crawl”, making them unable to stand and doomed to certain death.
The action was also attended by students of Parakalamos High School, who were particularly interested in both the process and the specific species hosted in their village.
It should be noted that the Municipality of Pogoni has procured 14 new nests to help the easy and smooth living of the storks, while others will be procured immediately, and it is planned to place nests in Kefalovryssos as well. “We are making every effort to protect the storks. It is the duty of all of us and at the same time it is a blessing to see these beautiful birds create their families”, emphasized the responsible deputy mayor Athanasios Fotiou.
