The Secretary of Public Order of the Rio de Janeiro’s city hall and the Municipality of Grande Tijuca carried out a joint operation to demolish precarious buildings on Rua São Francisco Xavier, in the neighborhood of Maracanã, North Zone of the capital. In all, five shacks were demolished, measuring around 1300 m2 and occupying the public area illegally. Fences in metal sheets and wood that demarcated the public space were also removed in order to divide the land irregularly and another 36 tons of rubble. “This is yet another operation to combat irregular construction in the city. We will continue to face these obstructions on public roads, always with a focus on planning, safety and, above all, the free movement of people”, says the Secretary of Public Order, Brenno Carnevale. The deputy mayor of Grande Tijuca, Felipe Quintans, adds: “As soon as we entered the land we found construction materials that would be used to start some kind of irregular property. There was already gravel, sand, some stakes, so all of that was seized. We will keep monitoring the place so that it is not occupied again”. This site has already been the target of a demolition operation, but again people have returned to subdivision the land.
