The ISP (Public Security Institute) released this Wednesday (22) the indicators of violence in the first two months of 2023 in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In January and February of this year, crimes against life, such as violent lethality and homicides, increased compared to the first two months of 2022.

Crimes of violent lethality, such as intentional homicide — when there is the intention to kill —, robbery followed by death, bodily injury followed by death and death by intervention of a state agent, resulted in 768 deaths in the first two months of 2023 and 405 in February . Compared to the first two months of last year, the crime recorded an increase of 6% in the accumulated and 12% in the monthly.

Street robberies (from passers-by, from cell phones and in collectives) had a 10% drop in the state of Rio compared to the same period last year. There were 8,881 cases between January and February of this year, against 9,909 in 2022. This is the lowest number verified since 2005, in the last 18 years.

Crimes against property, such as theft of cargo and vehicles, fell by 8% and 7%, respectively, in the period. In cargo thefts, the number of cases was the lowest in the last ten years, and in vehicles, the lowest since 2011.

Governor Cláudio Castro commented on the figures and highlighted the integrated work of the Civil and Military Police. “Without this, we would not have achieved such relevant results. We have invested in technology and intelligence, in addition to improving the working conditions of police officers to bring more and more security to those who live and invest in our state”, evaluated Castro.

In all, 5,972 people were arrested in the act in the two months of 2023, 10 firearms were removed from the streets per day, and, on average, the rifle, a weapon of war, had one weapon seized per day, which is 60 large-caliber weapons taken from the hands of criminals in the first two months of the year.

The director-president of the ISP, Marcela Ortiz, said that “the reduction in crimes against property, mainly street robberies, during Carnival, when we have several blocks on the streets, shows that the efforts of the Civil and Military Police are being effective,” he explained.
