A new call for calm. Emmanuel Macron estimated, this Thursday, that after the riots following the death of young Nahel, hit by the shooting of a policeman in Nanterre on June 27, “the first response is order, calm and concords”. It is then necessary to “work on the root causes”, he continued, during a trip to Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).

“We have all experienced an important moment in the life of the nation, so we will continue to work,” said the head of state from the city of François Bayrou, one of his main allies. According to his entourage, Emmanuel Macron must discuss with elected officials – including the mayor of Pau -, in “the extension” of the discussions he already had on Tuesday with some 300 mayors gathered at the Élysée on the subject of the answers to be given after the riots that engulfed France last week.

For her part, the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, also raised the subject during a trip to Lisieux (Calvados), in the Hauteville district, affected by urban violence. “Last night showed it, we returned more or less to a normal situation”, she rejoiced. “We naturally remain extremely vigilant by very gradually reducing our security measures”, she added, also saying that she was “determined that there is no impunity for the perpetrators of this violence”. The head of government instructed all prefects to “find the right procedures to allow public facilities to reopen as soon as possible”.

Like Emmanuel Macron, the head of government also spoke of the need to question the root causes of the violence. “How can this violence be explained? We need to understand, to take the time to diagnose. We must not rush with clichés to give false explanations, ”also warned Élisabeth Borne in the preamble to her meeting with elected officials. “A third of the cities that have been affected by violence do not have political districts of the city and almost half of the political districts of the city which are in major urban renewal operations, have not experienced violence. “, she said.

After his visit to Pau this Thursday morning, the Head of State will then go to the Hautes-Pyrénées on the occasion of the sixth stage of the Tour de France, between Tarbes and Cauterets-Cambasque, and its two legendary passes of the Grande Cycling loop: the Tourmalet and the Aspin.

According to the Élysée, Emmanuel Macron intends to “greet the runners, the organizers and all the public services mobilized to allow this major event of our sporting and cultural heritage to take place”. As usual, he will get into the vehicle of the competition director, Christian Prudhomme, to follow the circuit, before attending the presentation of the jerseys.
