“We absolutely must not be fooled by the cynicism and bad intentions of certain countries, which never hesitate in the face of instrumentalization or misinformation”. Asked in the Senate about the deterioration of France’s image abroad, the French Secretary of State in charge of Europe, Laurence Boone, did not hesitate, this Wednesday, July 12, to point the finger at the Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan, accused of having instrumentalized with “cynicism” the recent riots which shook France.

“In some countries, the images of the events are used for the benefit of the propaganda of the regimes and we have systematically responded to these malevolence, in particular to Azerbaijani, Turkish or Iranian remarks”, she added.

In early July, Tehran called on France to “end the violent treatment” of its population and to “show restraint”. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his part judged that “racism and colonialism” were at the origin of the riots in France. “The lessons of these countries would make you smile if there were not so many human rights problems within them,” said Laurence Boone.

At the end of June, the death of Nahel, a teenager killed by a policeman during a road check in Nanterre led to several nights of riots and hundreds of millions of euros in damage in many French cities. “The whole government has communicated a lot, including abroad, on the measures taken to restore public order on our territory”, assured Laurence Boone. “Our embassies have been informed, they have reassured, so that there have been no cancellations, changes to stays. There is no drop in tourist numbers”.
