All Ceylon People’s Congress (ACPC) President and Member of Parliament Rishad Bathiudeen has said that the European Union (EU) is concerned about the release of prisoners detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Rishad Bathiudeen, who recently met with EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka Denis Seipi, discussed various factors.

During the meeting, Rishad Bathiudeen thanked the IDPs for their assistance in the past and recalled the longstanding relationship between the EU and Sri Lanka.

Many Tamil and Muslim youths who have been unjustly arrested and imprisoned under the Prevention of Terrorism Act are finding it very difficult without even the economic facilities to take legal action against their arrest. Their families are suffering economically. Thus, it is rare for them to even get justice.

Therefore, as in the past, the EU must continue to extend its cooperation to the welfare of the affected prisoners, “he said.

Rishad Bediuzzaman also pointed out to the ambassador that many more scholars, intellectuals and students, including lawyer Hijaz Hezbollah, had been arrested and imprisoned under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Commenting on this, EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka Denise Seipi said that the EU has allocated funds for a three-year project to increase the capacity of the courts through the Ministry of Justice.
