Almost a quarter of the 1,260 electrical devices inspected in Switzerland in 2023 had major or minor defects. The authorities, who issued 114 sales bans, are in greater demand for electrical and photovoltaic equipment.
Most of the 210 pieces of faulty equipment had defects that could cause risks of electric shocks, burns, smoke or fire, the Federal Inspectorate of High Current Installations (ESTI) said in a press release on Monday.
The devices were listed on the internet and during on-site inspections, particularly at points of sale. Verifications were also carried out directly with manufacturers, but also after notifications from third parties, the authority adds.
Among the equipment prohibited from sale were home and office appliances, LED or laser lighting, chargers, external batteries, “Plug & Play” photovoltaic installations as well as household batteries. Last year, ESTI issued 10 recalls and safety alerts.
Call for warning
In addition, many electrical devices equipped with non-compliant foreign plugs are again subject to a sales ban, the ESTI notes. In around twenty cases, the economic actors themselves withdrew the products.
ESTI is receiving more and more questions regarding equipment for electromobility (charging terminals and cables), as well as components for photovoltaic installations (inverters, solar panels, grid connection units, etc.)
