Tata Power and Adani Group, two power companies, have announced that they will raise electricity tariffs in Mumbai from April 1. Electricity is currently one of the essential necessities. The demand for electricity comes from the factory to the houses. Accordingly the fees for it are changing according to its applications. Tata has been supplying electricity throughout the southern part of Mumbai. Similarly, Adani has been supplying electricity in the suburbs of Mumbai. These companies are supplying electricity with coal. Currently, the price of coal has gone up and so has the price of electricity.

The two companies that supply electricity in that category are forced to raise electricity tariffs. In this context, Tata Power and Adani Group have announced that they will be raising electricity tariffs in Mumbai from April 1. In the year 2020, a tonne of coal was sold in the international market for Rs. 5,500. Since then, the price of a tonne of coal has increased by 300 percent in the last two years due to various reasons, including the Russia-Ukraine war.

Tata, which supplies electricity to the southern part of Mumbai, mainly imports coal to generate electricity. Adani, which supplies power to Mumbai’s suburbs, relies on imports only when there is a domestic shortage of coal. So Tata is forced to raise electricity tariffs. Tata Motors has decided to increase the tariff to Rs 1.10 per unit. Adani has also suggested raising the tariff to 25 paise per unit. Accordingly, the Maharashtra Electricity Board has decided to implement the tariff hike from April 1.
