In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the father of a student who recently died by suicide in Tamil Nadu has also taken his own life, shocking the entire state. The incident sheds light on the distressing situation faced by students in the region who have been unable to secure seats in government medical colleges after appearing for NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test).

Selvasekhar, a photographer residing in the Chromepet area of Chennai, tragically lost his son to suicide. The news has left friends and neighbors stunned, leaving them grappling with a sense of helplessness as they attempt to console the grieving father.

The devastated Selvasekhar, who lived with his only son Jagadeeswaran after separating from his wife, has been shattered by the loss. Jagadeeswaran had appeared for NEET for two consecutive years in his quest to secure admission to a medical college. Despite retaking the exam and joining a NEET coaching center, his efforts did not yield the desired results.

On August 12, the day after the NEET examination, Jagadeeswaran took his own life while no one was home, leaving his father in profound shock. Speaking to the media, Selvasekhar demanded the abolition of NEET, stating that the chief minister, M.K. Stalin, had promised to take action. Expressing his desire that no one else goes through the same ordeal, Selvasekhar urged for the scrapping of the NEET solution.

Tragically, Selvasekhar’s situation worsened, and on Monday morning, he also resorted to suicide in an empty room at their residence. His friends believe that the overwhelming feeling of loneliness, no longer having anyone to depend on, pushed him toward this devastating decision.

Jagadeeswaran and many of his friends nurtured a dream of pursuing a career in medicine. All of them enrolled in a private NEET coaching center after completing their 12th standard. However, despite Jagadeeswaran’s commendable efforts, he couldn’t secure enough marks to gain admission to a government medical college.

Knowing that his father couldn’t afford to enroll him in a private medical college or send him abroad, Jagadeeswaran made the difficult decision to attempt the exam again and independently fund his coaching. Unfortunately, while some of his friends settled for alternative educational paths, Jagadeeswaran found himself overwhelmed by depression.

His close friend Santhosh revealed that Jagadeeswaran often consoled others who faced failure and encouraged them to continue trying. While Jagadeeswaran had been a good student, according to his friend Aditya, he fell short of the marks required for government college admission.

Varamathi, a neighbor and teacher, mentioned that Jagadeeswaran had aspired to become a doctor, but no external pressures influenced his decision. Varamathi expressed her confusion over why he chose to take such extreme measures.

This tragic incident has once again brought attention to the mental health challenges and immense pressure faced by students aiming for medical education in Tamil Nadu.
