jpnn.comJAKARTA – Reducing the prevalence of smoking through the use of alternative tobacco products was one of the important topics discussed at the 2024 Asia Pacific Harm Reduction Forum (APHRF) in Jakarta recently.

Alternative tobacco products such as e-cigarettes (vapes) and heated tobacco products have the potential to reduce risks for adult smokers.

One of the speakers at the scientific research and science discussion panel, Health Practitioner Navy Colonel (K) Dr. drg. Yun Mukmin Akbar from the Dental Institute, RSGM RE Martadinata, explained that the prevalence of smoking is also a serious problem among the military.

In general, challenging environmental factors, peer influence, and social acceptance contribute to the high prevalence of smoking among the military.

“We cannot suddenly ban smokers from quitting smoking, that is very difficult. Focusing on reducing the harm of tobacco and respecting human rights needs to be a priority,” said Yun Mukmin in his presentation.

In an effort to reduce the prevalence of smoking, the military has begun to implement the concept of risk reduction.

There are four main pillars in implementing the concept, including policy framework, funding and resources, community participation, and training and education.

From the four pillars, three intervention strategies are formulated. First, a comprehensive smoking cessation program by providing access to counseling and alternative tobacco products.
