In total, it will be necessary to overcome a total of 12 levels of demanding difficulty, where randomness will make each game face it differently. And it is that the hostile areas of Risky Woods will not cease to surprise us at any time.

Like other classics of the time like Ghost’n Goblins, we will have to move horizontally across the stage killing the enemies that will appear to meet us. That, and avoiding the rest of the dangers with the help of our jump. And although the ammunition is infinite, that does not mean that we are in a constant threat by the barrage of traps and hostile confrontations that will lie in wait for us. Luckily for Rohan, we will have items that will make our adventure easier… or not.

A very risky adventure, as its name suggests

One of the graces of Risky Woods, as I have mentioned before, is the randomness of the bonuses. There will be objects that give us more time to complete the level, but we can get another item that makes us go back in the phase. There are times when we will obtain a temporary improvement in the attack, and others where we receive nothing more than a score to swell our hi-score.

We will even have to be careful with food, since to recover life, our protagonist will take a “nap”, improving his health bar but limiting our time to complete the level. It’s more, in each phase you will have to free the petrified monks, but some of these stone statues will be a trap, damaging Rohan when we destroy it. As you can see, the word Risky fits perfectly with the nature of the game. And since nobody explains anything to you when you start the game, its beginnings are quite tough.

In order to defeat the evil that plagues the kingdom we will have daggers, but We can change the weapons as we progress in the adventure. There will be boomerangs, axes and other throwing weapons that will be very useful for us so as not to succumb to the adversary. In addition, some of these rivals will leave some coins that will give us better armor.

Risky Woods in its day was a very remarkable game. It is true that he greatly abused the classic trial and error of those times, but its control, proposal and difficulty were tight enough not to unsettle users. Of course, we are facing a review of the game and we have to analyze this new version. And this is where the problems come. Or more than problems, shortcomings.

The work that QUByte Interactive has done recovering this adventure is very good, but we find practically no changes compared to the original version released for Mega Drive. The visual aspect remains the same, without major modifications to its graphics or a facelift. In fact, we will continue to live the action on a screen with 4:3 format, with the typical illustrative bands on both sides of our television.

Playably there is also no improvement or inclusion of weight. We have already enjoyed similar proposals such as Cannon Dancer – Osman that they had fast rewind if we were in a hurry, or even had interesting extras that changed the way we approach the game. But here, except for a quick load/save, we don’t find any more news. It’s practically reliving Risky Woods as it came into the world, for better and for worse.

This proposal invites us to explore the places of the Forgotten Lands and facing all the dangers that its 12 phases contain. And although we have infinite ammunition and bonuses scattered throughout each screen, the journey will not be easy. Firstly, because of the huge number of enemies that will appear, and secondly, because of the randomness factor in the game that will offer us objects that help Rohan… or do the opposite.

If you want a trip back in time to discover or relive an action classic, Risky Woods may be a good candidate. Of course, it is a pity that this relaunch does not come with weight news, or extras or visual improvements adapted to current times.
