Rita, a film with Guatemalan talent co-produced with Hollywood
Rita It is the most recent production of Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante. With a powerful message intertwined in a fantastic universe, this film had its world premiere on July 25 at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada, where it won the Best Cinematography AwardIn Guatemala, the public will be able to enjoy it starting on August 7 at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center.
The film, written and directed by Bustamante, combines magical realism, adventure, horror and suspense to present the story of a 13-year-old girl who, after fleeing a home with a violent father, finds refuge in a state safe house, from which she will later try to escape with other girls. The story comes to life in Guatemala and was recorded during the pandemic, using as settings some public institutes and other places in Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala.
This film also highlights Guatemalan talent not only through the professionals who participate both in front of and behind the cameras, but also in the music, with the main song performed by Gaby Moreno. How cool!
Guatemalan talent that will shine in Rita
Jayro Bustamante brought together a group of young actresses from different parts of the country, such as Petén, Chinautla and Sumpango, to bring the characters in the film to life. For many of them, this film represents their debut in cinema, offering an enriching experience that highlights national talent. Giuliana Santa Cruz plays the main character, Rita, accompanied by Alejandra Vásquez in the role of Bebé, Ángela Quevedo as Sulmy, Glendy Rucal as Gladys and André Aldana as La Terca.
The cast also includes Sabrina de la Hoz, Margarita Kénefic, Ernesto Molina, Rosa Emilia González, Sabina Pozuelos, Melissa Osorio, Sandra Jazmín De León, Juan Pablo Olyslager, Luis Carlos Pineda, and Amanda Samayoa. The casting to select the cast of girls and adolescents was held during the pandemic, with approximately 5,500 applicants from all over the country. This broad call made it possible to involve young people interested in acting and with the potential to develop their acting skills.
The first co-production between Hollywood and Guatemala
Rita marks an important achievement in the Guatemalan film industry as it is the first co-production between Hollywood and Guatemala. This project was produced by The Production House and the Hollywood production company Concordia Studio.
