At lunchtime, the scent of oriental spices, melted cheese and freshly roasted nuts wafts through the spacious Josefsburg area at Kufstein Fortress. The market of the Kufstein Knights’ Festival is located in this architecturally spacious historic roundabout, in the center of which is a large show stage. The place where medieval fans of all ages get what their heart desires – from the magnificent robes of a nobleman to delicate lace fabrics for the new veil of the damsel in the castle. But physical pleasures are also provided here in a variety of ways. The secret of the barbarian skewer Despite this rich range of dishes, one sees – and not only at lunchtime – every third visitor enjoying a 30 centimeter long skewer wrapped in dough bites. This skewer has been the epicurean highlight for almost every festival visitor for years. This full-bodied and extremely delicious specialty was invented by Charly Steinmeir more than 20 years ago – after many attempts, as he expressly emphasizes. Put simply, the barbarian skewer consists of dough similar to bread and poultry meat. The special subtlety, why this seemingly simple recipe tastes good to so many people, is a well-kept secret of the inventor, who comes from the Bavarian town of Markt Schwaben. The “secret ingredients” are not only in the delicious dough, but also in the meat spices, the composition of which almost requires knowledge of alchemy much offered. They have their own children’s area. It is located in the part of the fortress called the Peacock Tail. Here they can, among other things, take part in children’s knight tournaments, listen to storytellers, do handicrafts and have great make-up done. The night, on the other hand, traditionally belongs to playing with fire at the Kufstein Knights Festival. Artist Ben Eichhorn from the professional show group Event Puppets is a master of this art recognized throughout Europe. His fire shows give you goosebumps and open your mouth in amazement – absolutely worth experiencing. In our latitudes, the show can only be seen at the Kufstein Knights’ Festival.
