Ritupurna Neog of Assam, through her organization Akam Foundation, is building free libraries in those villages where children still have to choose between books and food.

“People used to tease me a lot in school because I had a girlish demeanor. At that time I needed a place to hide and for me that place was the library.”

Ritupurna Neog, who used to hide behind the library in her childhood, fell in love with books so much that today she is making free libraries in every village so that discrimination can be eliminated on the basis of education. Ritupurna from Assam had a happy childhood like any other child, but by the time she reached adolescence, she had to face many taunts in school for her girlish behavior.

This period was certainly difficult but the power of education and the support of his parents never allowed him to weaken. It was then that she understood the power of education, to make this power of education reach every person, she dreamed of building a free library in the village.

To fulfill his dream, he studied in the field of social work. Later Ritupurna started working with different social work societies of Assam. Even while working, she never forgot her dream of opening a library. She used to buy some books every month with her salary. At that time, Ritupurna started an online storytelling program using social media. During the time of Corona, people liked listening to his stories in Assamese language and his program was also a big hit. After which, with his 600 books and the help of his parents, he started the first free library in the village, Kitape Katha Koi.

The library that started with just 600 books, today has more than 1200 books, which has been possible with the help of other book lovers like him. Today she is helping more than 200 children under two free libraries in two villages of Assam. Not only this, she also keeps going to different villages from time to time and doing storytelling programs.

Besides, she has also visited more than 40 universities and institutes in the last two years and reached out to more than 10 thousand people to bring awareness about Gender Discrimination. Ritu still gets the strength to make all this possible from books. On the basis of education, Ritu is trying to create a society where there is no class, no discrimination!
