The Investigation and Final Days in Brownsville, Texas
Cameron County Justice of the Peace Judge Cyndi Hinojosa declared RJ Mitte dead at 1:32 p.m. local time on Monday, October 12, at his residence in Brownsville, Texas. Law enforcement officials opened an investigation into the actor’s passing, which was later confirmed to be a suicide by his representative, Sean Reilly.

In the weeks leading up to his death, Mitte was navigating personal and professional friction. Sources close to his family told TMZ that tension had mounted between Mitte and his fiancée, Kennedy Suarez, who had given him an ultimatum to choose between her and his mother, Dyna Mitte. Mitte, who maintained an extremely close relationship with his mother and his sister, Lacianne Carriere, was unwilling to cut off his family, creating severe stress in his relationship. He and Suarez had been friends for a decade before beginning to date in 2020, and they got engaged on October 10, 2025, nearly a year before his death.
Days before his passing, Mitte gave what would be his final interview on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, released on October 5. Podcaster Joe Vulpis later expressed shock, noting that the actor had spoken enthusiastically about his future plans, including a newly accepted film role and promoting his project Talking to Strangers. During the chat, Mitte reflected on his breakthrough role and admitted that he disliked watching himself onscreen because any perceived mistake would make him spiral.
Tributes from Co-Stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and Anna Gunn
The actor’s sudden death prompted an outpouring of grief from his former co-stars on the Emmy-winning AMC crime drama Breaking Bad, which ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013. Mitte appeared in 56 episodes as Walter “Flynn” White Jr., the son of Walter White.

I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight… RJ Mitte, my sweet son on ‘Breaking Bad’ has died. I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm.
Cranston revealed that he and Mitte had been exchanging messages just a few weeks prior and were making plans to have lunch. Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, shared his grief with The Hollywood Reporter.
I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed.
Advocacy Work and Unreleased Final Projects
Diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a toddler, Mitte spent much of his adult life using his platform to challenge stereotypes and advocate for disability rights. Beyond his television work in shows such as Switched at Birth and The Guardians of Justice, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and as president of The Mitte Foundation supporting community initiatives.

Mitte also left behind unreleased artistic projects. He starred in an upcoming thriller titled Cassi opposite Dove Cameron. According to writer and director Josh Webber, the film was shot in 2023 but faced a series of completion hurdles. While Mitte was able to watch an earlier rough cut before his death, he never saw the final version of the film, which is slated for release in 2027.
Days before his death, Mitte attended the Los Angeles premiere of his film Talking to Strangers at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills on September 30. He also spoke with Page Six about his optimism regarding a potential Breaking Bad spinoff from series creator Vince Gilligan, revealing he had pitched darker reboot ideas focused on his character seeking revenge.
Community Remembrance and Funeral Arrangements in Texas
Hundreds of mourners filled the Mitte Center in Brownsville, Texas, for a Celebration of Life ceremony. The service drew an overflow crowd of family members, local residents, and supporters honoring his contributions to the community and disability advocacy.
Following the ceremony, Mitte’s mother, Dyna Mitte, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to honor her son while addressing public speculation surrounding his career, finances, and relationship. She urged families to remain vigilant. Listen to your children. Watch for the signs. Be in tune with them, be there for them and be willing to get help when it’s needed,
Dyna Mitte said.
