Road safety: Ambassador Hilale launches the global campaign “From New York to Marrakech”

The launch of this campaign took place during a high-level event organized on Monday at the International Peace Institute (IPI) in the American metropolis, under the theme: “A safe and sustainable mobility path in cities, from New York in Marrakech”, in the presence of eminent personalities, senior United Nations officials, ambassadors and media accredited to the UN.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Hilale stressed that Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aims to make the 4th World Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech the “voice” of developing countries, which bear a heavy burden both in terms of loss of life due to road accidents and in terms of socio-economic impact.

He noted that in collaboration with the global road safety community, Morocco, as host country, will ensure that the Marrakech Declaration which will be adopted at the end of the Conference is “very strong and oriented towards action”.

The ambassador noted that special attention will be given to Africa during this major event, especially as the continent grapples with rising road fatality rates and where mobility systems and transport are evolving at a very rapid pace.

The Ambassador Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN further indicated that this important global conference will bring together leaders, experts, academics, as well as representatives of the private sector and NGOs. The aim is to examine ways to accelerate action towards the Sustainable Development Goals of halving the number of road deaths worldwide by 2030.

The Marrakech Conference plans pre-events, a ministerial round table, five plenary sessions and 24 parallel sessions, in addition to an innovation competition and a film festival on road safety, the diplomat said.

The event will give pride of place to the issue of financing road safety, said Mr. Hilale, noting that in collaboration with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Road Safety, Morocco will host the High Level Engagements Forum as a pre-conference event.

The ambassador also noted that road safety has been considered a national priority in Morocco since February 18, 2005, the date on which His Majesty King Mohammed VI launched the first dedicated national strategy.

He also pointed out that the second road safety strategy which covers the period 2017-2026 aims to reduce the number of deaths due to road accidents to 50% by 2026, adding that these efforts have been reinforced by the creation in 2018 of the National Road Safety Agency.

In the same vein, the diplomat indicated that Morocco has just launched the “Safe Moto” program dedicated to awareness, road safety, law enforcement, education and improvement of quality and standards. infrastructure.

Referring to the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, Mr. Hilale noted that progress has certainly been made towards the objectives set out, but much remains to be done to accelerate action.

It is in this context that the new resolution entitled “Improving global road safety”, supported by the Kingdom of Morocco and adopted by consensus on June 24 with the support of 57 member states, falls, he underlined. , specifying that this resolution urges member countries and relevant stakeholders to strengthen collective commitment to accelerate the implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action on Road Safety and to make this issue a political priority.

This event was marked by the participation of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Road Safety, Jean Todt, the CEO of JCDecaux North America, Jean-Luc Decaux, the deputy head of the delegation of of the European Union to the United Nations, Hedda Samson, the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN, Krzysztof Szczerski and the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation of the City of New York, Ydanis Rodriguez.

Also taking part in this meeting were Dani Simons, Vice-President at Alstom, the American actor and road safety activist, Jean Reno, the co-founders of Street Art for Mankind, Audry and Thibault Decker, the Japanese artist Dragon 76, in addition to Esra Sergi Bertani, of the United Nations Office for Partnership.
