DIG/ TotalEnergies Gabon launched, on Saturday July 29, 2023 at the Baie des Rois in Libreville, an awareness campaign, called “1 helmet, 1 life”, designed to raise awareness among two-wheeler drivers of road safety and the importance of wearing an approved helmet.

The aim is to make drivers of these two-wheeled vehicles aware of the risks they run by disregarding road safety rules.

During this campaign, Marckus Bouaki Koumba, manager of the transport management system at Total Energy Marketing, recalled the rules to be observed by an engine manufacturer, in order to avoid any accident situation.

“It’s about protecting yourself and others, respecting the rules and maintaining the bike. It was found that there are several helmets that do not meet the standards, they do not have chinstraps, that is, in the event of an accident, the helmet can jump off. However, a helmet with a chinstrap protects the motorist », he said. Before continuing:

“Total Energies wants to set benchmarks in terms of safety. And we think we can avoid accidents by working on individual behavior, by working on everyone’s vigilance to always be within our zero accident objectives. »

It should be noted that this campaign saw the presence of the general direction of road safety, for which TotalEnergie is a partner, as well as the Ogooué Crazy Bikers (OCB, the bikers club of Libreville)

“It must be said that wearing a helmet is compulsory in the Gabonese Republic. Failure to comply exposes contraveners, according to the law, to fines ranging from 300 to 500 thousand francs and punishable by 5 months to one year in prison”, recalled Antoine Moubouyi, head of the road safety department.

Inaugurated on May 15 in Togo, this campaign is a TotalEnergies initiative deployed in 40 subsidiaries across 3 continents.

In total, 100,000 helmets will be distributed during the year 2023 in 34 African countries, but also in Asia Pacific (India, Cambodia, Vietnam) and in America (Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Chile). These helmets meet current international standards and are suitable for humid climates and high temperatures.

This distribution is accompanied by a unique system to raise awareness of road safety concerning motorized two-wheelers.

This operation will contribute to the objectives of the « Global Safe & Affordable Helmet Campaign » carried by Jean Todt, special envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for road safety.
