Roads muddy due to continuous rains; A ragged pity as many fields have been dug up

by time news

CHENNAI: Due to the northeast monsoon, most of the roads in Chennai are potholed and impassable. As the roads have collapsed due to digging by various departments, due to lack of precautionary measures to repair the roads, motorists and public are facing accidents.

5 lakh rupees per ward and gravel, sand and tar mix were provided by the corporation for the maintenance of roads, but there was an allegation that these were not used properly.

In order to face monsoon rains in Chennai, the works of constructing rainwater drainage are going on under various projects on behalf of the Corporation.

Apart from this, the works are going on through the Highway Department and Water Resources Department.

Also, various works are going on including carrying ‘cables’ to the burial site on behalf of the Electricity Board and burying the pipes on behalf of the Water Board.

Nominal work

The Chennai Corporation had ordered to carry out temporary rehabilitation works on various roads after these works were completed.

Also, on behalf of the corporation, Rs. 5 lakh per ward and a total of Rs. 10 crore were allotted to 200 wards. Along with this, gravel, sand, tar mix etc. were also provided as per requirement.

But these works were only nominal. In particular, many road ruts were paved with sand and gravel only, without concrete or tar mix.

In this case, Northeast Monsoon has started in Chennai and it has been raining heavily since October 31. Due to this rain, most of the roads in the city, which are not properly maintained, have become slushy. They appear as hollow and hilly like a polyhedron.

Risk of accident

In particular, T. Nagar Tirumala Road, Anna Nagar Shanti Colony 13th Main Road and internal roads, service roads under Tirumangalam flyover are in poor condition.

At various places including Tiruvottiyur Highway, Ambattur Industrial Estate Road, the roads of the Corporation and Highway Departments have turned into potholes and ridges and look like a culvert. Due to water filling during rainy season, many people are involved in accidents without knowing the existence of the pothole.

Also, rainwater drains and manhole covers are broken at many places. Electrical ‘cables’ in ‘centre medians’ are also seen as dangerous.

Due to this, there is a demand that the Tamil Nadu government and the corporation should pay attention to the road maintenance work as a wartime measure to avoid accidents during the rainy season.
