Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner Remembered by Colleagues as Son Faces Murder Charges
More than two weeks after the tragic deaths of acclaimed film director Rob Reiner and his photographer wife, Michele Reiner, an outpouring of grief and remembrance continues from friends and peers in the entertainment industry. The couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14th, and their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
The loss has prompted heartfelt tributes, highlighting Reiner’s artistic contributions and the warmth of his personal character. Cary Elwes, star of Reiner’s 1987 classic The Princess Bride, shared his sorrow on Instagram, explaining he needed time to process the tragedy before speaking publicly. “Enough time has passed that I can finally put my grief into words,” Elwes wrote, recalling his immediate connection with Reiner upon their first meeting at age 24. “I fell in love with him.” He added that Reiner’s decision to cast him in The Princess Bride felt like being given “the keys to the castle.”
Elwes reminisced about the constant laughter on set, noting the film’s themes of love, loyalty, and sacrifice mirrored Reiner’s own values. “The movie is about love, loyalty and sacrifice. Things that Rob held dear. Which is among the many reasons he was the perfect person to direct it,” he stated. He cherished Reiner’s laughter, describing it as “one of the greatest sounds I’ve ever known – so heartfelt it still rings in my ears.” Elwes remembered Reiner as a deeply compassionate man, unconcerned with social status. “This was a man who felt deeply,” he wrote. “Whose heart was filled with love and compassion. He wasn’t impressed by how much money you had or if you had a privileged upbringing. He just wanted to know if you were a ‘good guy.’” He concluded his tribute with a poignant quote from The Princess Bride: “Sure, death cannot stop true love but life is pain without you.”
Fellow director Martin Scorsese also shared his memories of Reiner in an essay for The New York Times, recalling their friendship that began in the 1970s. “Right away, I loved hanging out with Rob. We had a natural affinity for each other,” Scorsese wrote. He described Reiner as possessing a “beautiful sense of uninhibited freedom” and a “great barrelling laugh.” Reiner had a supporting role in Scorsese’s 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, playing the father of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. Scorsese praised Reiner’s comedic talent and improvisational skills, stating, “He could improvise with the best… he was a master at comedy.” He also noted Reiner’s understanding of the complexities of his character, a man grappling with his son’s success and impending downfall.
The investigation into the Reiners’ deaths continues, with a Los Angeles superior court judge recently agreeing to bar the release of their autopsy reports at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department. A court order issued last week placed a security hold on the case, restricting the public release of “any investigative information, notes, reports or photos.” The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office had previously confirmed the deaths were the result of homicide, citing “multiple sharp force injuries” as the cause.
The tragedy was further complicated by controversial remarks from former President Donald Trump, who suggested Reiner’s death was linked to his outspoken criticism of the former president. Trump characterized Reiner as “tortured and struggling” and suffering from “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME,” claiming his “obsession” with Trump drove others “CRAZY.” These comments drew widespread condemnation, including from podcaster Joe Rogan.
Speaking on his podcast with comedian Shane Gillis, Rogan expressed his disappointment with Trump’s remarks. “If you say that privately that’s one thing, which is also crazy, but it’s so disappointing,” Rogan stated. He drew a parallel to hypothetical reactions if a former president were to comment negatively on someone after their death, suggesting it demonstrated a disturbing lack of empathy. Rogan concluded by suggesting someone should have taken Trump’s phone away before he commented on Reiner’s death.
The loss of Rob and Michele Reiner has left a significant void in the entertainment industry, and the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings will undoubtedly continue to draw attention in the coming months.
